Medical Book Prizes entry details

Entries are invited for the Medical Book Awards 2008.

The principal aim of these prizes is to encourage authors who work in the United Kingdom and write for medical professionals and the general public; in selecting the prize winners preference will be given to books commissioned by UK publishers for the home market.



Rules of entry:



1. All books entered must have been published in the United Kingdom in the period 1st May 2007 –



30th April 2008.



2. No book may be entered in more than one category.



3. Publishers may submit a maximum of 10 books per imprint per category.



4. All books must reach the Society of Authors by the deadline of 20th April 2008. Books reaching the Society after this date will not be considered.



5. Three copies of each book must be submitted. The copies are non-returnable.



6. Each book must be submitted with the following information:



the publication date, the list price, a note of the category being entered.



7. Entries must fit the criteria for the appropriate individual category (see next page)



How to enter:



For each entry please supply:



3 copies of the book (non-returnable)



the list price

  •   the publication date
  •   the name and office address of the commissioning editor
  •   a statement of which category the book is entered for

NEW BOOKS



Prize 1:The Richard Asher Prize £1,200



Sponsored anonymously.



First edition textbook aimed at undergraduate students by not more than 3 authors.



Cost, readability, and accuracy of information for students will be the most important considerations.



Prize 2:New authored book £1,200



First edition books for postgraduates; professional and reference books are eligible.



Prize 3:New edited book £1,800 in total



First edition books for undergraduates or postgraduates; professional and reference books



are eligible. Two prizes of £900 will be awarded: for the best book with a retail price of less than £75, and for the best book retailing at £75 or over.



Prize 4:New non-clinical medical book £600



First edition books on medical history, medical ethics, medical education, medical humanities, or other non-clinical aspects of health care are eligible.



NEW EDITION BOOKS



Prize 5:New edition authored book £600



Second or subsequent edition books for undergraduates or postgraduates; professional and reference books are eligible. Books that have previously won an RSM/Society of Authors award may not be entered.



Prize 6:New edition edited book. £600



Second or subsequent edition books for undergraduates or postgraduates; professional and reference books are eligible. Books that have previously won an RSM/Society of Authors award may not be entered.

MEDICO-LEGAL BOOKS



Prize 7:The Minty Prize of the Medico-Legal Society £1,000



Sponsored by the Medico-Legal Society.



First or subsequent edition medico-legal books are eligible.



BOOKS FOR THE GENERAL READER



Prize 8: New medical or health care book for the general reader £600



Sponsored by the RSM Department of Membership Services.



First edition medical or health care book aimed at informing patients, carers or the general public.



MEDICAL BOOK OF THE YEAR



Prize 9: The Royal Society of Medicine Library Prize: the Society of Authors/RSM Medical



Book of the Year £1,200



Sponsored by the RSM Library. No submissions.



The winners of prizes 1 – 8 will be considered for this prize.
